Skills Assessment
29 Sept 2026
Are you studying or graduating from trade courses in Australia, such as Commercial Cookery, Automotive, Carpentry, or Welding?
Many international students focus solely on extending their visas after graduation and often miss the critical timing for their Skills Assessment—the essential first step toward Australian Permanent Residency (PR). The most efficient way to secure your path to PR is to establish a precise skills assessment plan before renewing or extending your visa.
In this post, we break down the Job Ready Program (JRP) pathway managed by Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) and highlight the key precautions you must keep in mind.
📌 TRA Job Ready Program (JRP) Overview
The JRP is an employment-based skills assessment program designed for Australian VET graduates. It consists of a prerequisite stage followed by 3 structured steps:
Prerequisite: PSA (Provisional Skills Assessment)
Overview: The essential preliminary assessment required to apply for the Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) and to unlock eligibility for the JRP.
Key Requirement: Verifies your qualification (e.g., Certificate III/IV or higher) and relevant training requirements for your nominated occupation.
STEP 1: JRE (Job Ready Employment)
Overview: The stage where you start accumulating paid work experience with a TRA-registered employer.
Key Requirement: Requires a minimum of 12 months of full-time (or pro-rata part-time equivalent) paid employment based on an average of 38 hours per week. After completing 6 months of full-time equivalent employment, you must submit a Skills Progress Report (SPR) and a 6-month Employment Confirmation Form. (You can register up to 5 approved employers throughout the program.)
STEP 2: JRWA (Job Ready Workplace Assessment)
Overview: The practical workplace assessment phase conducted by a TRA-approved Registered Training Organisation (RTO) assessor.
Key Requirement: Eligible to apply after completing at least 6 months of full-time equivalent employment and receiving an invitation. An assessor will evaluate your technical skills, safety, and industry standards through an on-site visit or practical assessment.
STEP 3: JRFA (Job Ready Final Assessment)
Overview: The final review step to complete your JRP.
Key Requirement: Applied after passing the JRWA and completing the full 12-month employment requirement. Receiving the official JRFA outcome letter allows you to satisfy the skills assessment criteria for skilled PR visas such as Subclasses 189, 190, 491, and 186 (DE).
⚠️ Essential Precautions & Checklist
3-Year Time Limit: You must apply for JRE within 3 years of receiving your PSA outcome, and you must complete the entire JRP within 3 years from your official JRP Start Date.
Prior Employment Claim: You may claim up to 3 months of unbroken paid prior employment upon your initial JRE application. Once you receive your PSA outcome and meet the criteria, applying for JRE promptly is strongly recommended.
Strict Pay Evidence Standards: Payslips or invoices must match your official bank statement transactions 100%. Cash payments are strictly unacceptable.
Flexible Employment Structure: Working full-time is not mandatory; part-time work across up to 5 registered employers is allowed (calculated on a pro-rata basis).
Strict Reporting Deadlines: Any change of employer or job role must be reported to TRA within 28 calendar days. Changes to contact details, passport, or working hours must be reported within 14 calendar days. Unreported hours will not count toward your requirements!
Subcontractor Conditions: Subcontractors must complete at least 6 months of full-time equivalent work under a single main contractor willing to sign verification reports.
Mandatory 12-Month Duration Rule: Even if you work overtime or extra hours, the program cannot be completed in less than 12 months from your Start Date (including any approved prior employment).
Continuous Employment Until Final Outcome: It is strongly advised to maintain your registered employment in your nominated occupation until you officially receive your JRFA Outcome Letter.
